Brad J (Fire) Colwell — owner
Brad has been inspired by Bikram Choudhury to carry a message sent from his guru, of what a yogic system of health culture has to offer. Brad started practicing in December of 1999, in Kitsilano at Lisa Pelzer and Danny Dworkis' studio. He has been teaching yoga since completing the teacher training program under Bikram himself in 2000. The mission statement Brad has at his studio is to offer a healing center for anyone who wants to help themselves in any part of their life, including to bring back the ‘fire’ that might be lacking in one's life. Brad also lives by Bikram’s mantra: “Never too late, never too old and never too sick to start again from scratch.”
Here is what Alex Ivanov, a doctoral student at SFU and a regular at the Studio, says about BJ: “Brad is unmatched in the personalized attention he gives to students. Sure, many yoga teachers will give you individual corrections once in a while. But Brad does that regularly, and manages to motivate you. You can feel the fire in him, and that's energizing. It’s like you have a personal trainer who is familiar with your progress over the long haul. Out of the blue, as he's doing his dialog, Brad may call your name and point to a weakness of yours. Incredibly, he recently even reprimanded me while I was taking someone else's class. He had been watching through the door! Brad's sense of humour is also bang on, friendly yet subtle. His dialog is evolving as well. Compared to my first class with him in 2004, I now hear him talk about breathing a whole lot more. And from personal experience, I know that learning how to breathe properly is the single most important thing.”
